Student Research Assistant - Aquatic Diagnostic
Job Description
Students gain hands-on experience in diagnostic methods (molecular and histological) for pathogens and diseases of invertebrate and vertebrate aquatic species.
Students will become familiar with the Aquatic Diagnostic Lab and the methods used in diagnosing different fish, shellfish and bivalves diseases. The person will work directly with either other students, lab technicians, lab manager or Dr. Sharon. During the year, it is expected the student learn how to collect and preserve Oysters, clams and fish samples for diagnosis, trim in tissues for histological processing, help with general lab maintenance, produce various solutions which can be used in the lab and help with ongoing experiments.

- Have a strong attention to detail
- Comfortable with handling and dissecting animals
- Follow standard operating procedures and task lists
- Work well and respectively with other student workers and staff
- Be comfortable with physically demanding activities (lifting, climbing on ladders/stepstools, squatting, being on feet for majority of shift, working in wet floor conditions
- Other tasks can be assigned including: data entry, inventory, or more desk-based work upon request
