Student Research Assistant and Program Support

Job Description

The student will be trained with the basics of economics research, learn about data sources and the methodology involved in presenting results in academic papers. The student will also work with excel in creating tables/graphs etc. The student will develop communication and leadership skills by emerging as a student leader in the economics area and participating in various activities. Engaging in LinkedIn will help the student develop professional skills and establish connections.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

The student will assist faculty in the economics area with their research. The student will be trained on organizing data in tables and charts and helping faculty. The student will assist with program development by being an active participant in open house and accepted students days, and engage in student panels organized during these sessions. In doing so, the student will learn communication skills and also provide a service to the economics area. The student will communicate with other students in the major regarding program activities. The student will work on LinkedIn to identify economics alumni with faculty guidance.

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

The student will continue providing assistance for faculty research with greater involvement. This could include retrieving data from various sources, creating tables/graphs and working on citations. The student will take a leadership role in the department and serve as a point person that the faculty and other students can go to with questions/activities related to the major. The student will recruit other students for programs like open house/ accepted Student days and continue to take a lead role in these activities. The student will continue working on LinkedIn and provide alumni information to interested students for career plans.

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

By now the student should be able to contribute substantially to faculty research. The student will continue with tasks described earlier but should be able to do things with less direction. The student will also help faculty with literature search from library resources. By now, the student should have taken a leadership role in the department and work with faculty to start an Economics Club, and serve as the leader. The student will continue to serve as a point person that students can go to with questions related to the major. Student will take a leadership role and engage with prospective students during open house/accepted students days and participate in student panels. By this point the student should be able to connect with some alumni via LinkedIn and provide alumni information to interested students for career plans.
