PR Program Promotions Lead

Job Description

Through each year of the internship, the student will apply theoretical knowledge gained in PR classes鈥攕uch as writing for strategic communication, media planning, and audience analysis鈥攊n real-world contexts.

In Year 1, the student will build foundational skills in digital content creation, institutional messaging, and event promotion, aligning with introductory PR and media writing courses. Year 2 emphasizes strategic thinking and data-driven outreach, paralleling courses in public relations campaigns, audience research, and digital analytics. By Year 3, the student will take on leadership roles, executing long-term projects, mentoring peers, and contributing to departmental strategy, directly reflecting advanced coursework in public relations management and integrated communication planning.

Throughout the internship, the student will develop a robust professional portfolio, and build valuable relationships with faculty, staff, and external partners. This continuous and escalating responsibility ensures that by graduation, the intern is not only academically prepared but also professionally experienced鈥攔eady to enter the workforce with confidence and competence.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

There is a clear need for a well-qualified intern within the Public Relations program to support its growth and visibility both within the institution and beyond. As the field of PR becomes increasingly relevant across disciplines鈥攔anging from business and political science to media studies and health communication鈥攕trategic outreach is essential.

Learning Goals:

  • Develop a working knowledge of institutional branding and messaging guidelines.
  • Gain proficiency in writing for various platforms and audiences.
  • Understand the structure, goals, and interdisciplinary relevance of the PR program.

Objective: Build fundamental PR skills, learn the academic program structure, and begin executing basic outreach tasks.

  • Set up Classroom visits to explain PRSSA in COMM program and other related disciplines.
  • Run the Program Social Media Accounts, posting curated content weekly
  • Attend ASD & Open house.
  • Conduct research on peer institutions鈥 PR program promotion strategies.
  • Help coordinate information sessions and campus tabling events targeting prospective students.
  • Support the design and distribution of flyers, brochures, and digital media for recruitment.

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

Objective: Take ownership of key initiatives, refine messaging strategies, and begin data-informed outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a semester-long social media content calendar for the program.
  • Analyze engagement metrics to optimize messaging and platform use.
  • Lead student ambassador efforts for open houses and campus events.
  • Coordinate with admissions and marketing departments for cross-promotional opportunities.
  • Pitch and write feature stories (student spotlights, faculty interviews) for campus media and newsletters.
  • Begin outreach to alumni & internship providers for employment and internship opportunities  
  • Attend ASD & Open houses

Learning Goals:

  • Strengthen skills in media planning, analytics, and campaign design.
  • Learn how to tailor messaging for diverse prospective student audiences.
  • Practice project management and collaboration 

Year 3
Responsibility/Function

Objective: Lead strategic initiatives, mentor new interns or student volunteers, and contribute to long-term growth planning.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive annual PR for PR campaign for program promotion, including print, digital, and in-person components.
  • Attend ASD & Open houses
  • Mentor  & Train new interns or student volunteers in PR writing, digital content creation, and campus outreach.
  • Create a recruitment toolkit for faculty, including customizable presentations and materials for SHAE Programs
  • Launch a 鈥淲hy PR?鈥 awareness campaign to illustrate the field鈥檚 relevance to other disciplines.
  • Contribute to alumni outreach by creating content that highlights post-graduate success stories.
  • Present outcomes and strategic recommendations to program faculty at the end of the internship.

  • Demonstrate leadership through planning and execution of complex, multi-platform initiatives.
  • Build a portfolio showcasing real-world results in academic program promotion.
  • Develop high-level strategic thinking aligned with programmatic and institutional goals.

*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
